November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetic patient doing glucose level blood testDiabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin.  The disease is generally characterized as four different types, Prediabetes, Type 1, Type 2  and Gestational Diabetes.  Research indicates that Pre Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes are largely caused by lifestyle choices and can be prevented or controlled through adjustments to diet and activity levels.  The prevalence of diabetes is astounding, according to the American Diabetes Association there are over 25.8 million children and adults in the US (8.5% of the population)  diagnosed with Diabetes.  Given these huge numbers,  it is important for all of us to become educated as to the devastating effects and potential for prevention of the condition.
