Living with Low Vision

Low vision occurs when a person only has partial sight that cannot be corrected by glasses, contact lenses, medicine or surgery. Low vision can make everyday activities seem impossible. According to The American Academy of Ophthalmology, making a few adjustments around the house can maintain comfort and support independence.
Here are a few tips for helping older adults with low vision maintain their independence.
• Improved Lighting – Use direct lighting from behind the shoulder to reduce glare. Be sure that kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and closets are well lit.
• Increase Contrast – For example, pour coffee into a white cup or cereal in a black or dark colored bowl. Use felt pens instead of ball point pens.
• Think Bigger – Magnification is an essential tool for those with low vision.
• Get Rid of Hazards – Tape down throw rugs and remove electrical cords to decrease the risk of falling.
Modifying your home does not have to be expensive or difficult. Some useful adaptations are as simple as installing brighter light bulbs or replacing sheer curtains with blinds to cut down on glare.
